Train trip down the "Devils Nose" - Ecuador
CLICK ON AN IMAGE TO SEE A FULL SIZED VERSION
The train no longer runs all the way from Duran on the coast to Quito due to permanant flood damage to the line,
however a tourist train still runs several times a
week from Riobamba to Alusi and down the "Devils Nose" and back to Riobamba. The Devils Nose railway is reputed to be one of the world's best railway engineering feats and a series of switchbacks are used to gain altitude by backing up one and then going forward on the next one. Riding on the roof is of course the best way to see the gorge...., that is, if it is not raining.
